Chapter 5: Relationships
Itâs no doubt that humans are social creatures. Whether we like it or not, our whole existence is based around people and the relationships we forge with them. Some may be life-long bonds, and some others may be brief, but these interactions with other people can be a powerful influence on our mindsets and how we choose to live our lives.
Itâs normally easy to be able to define someone by the people they choose to surround themself with. If they spend time with people who are avid drinkers and partiers, it's very likely that they like to drink and party too. If someone is friends with a group of people who are committed to church and prayer, then itâs fair to assume that they do the same. Itâs more difficult to surround yourself with people that you donât have much in common with because in order to solidify a relationship there needs to be common ground or something to bond over. In short, the people who you surround yourself with define who you are and vice versa.
Youâre going to want to spend time with people that you have things in common with. For example, letâs say you enjoy gardening. You might search for people who have the same passion for gardening so that you can all bond over your love for Arum Lilies. It could be a love of food, a genre of music, or religious belief. Whatever the commonality may be, you will seek friendship with those that are more likely to understand you.
That being said, it makes sense in order to surround yourself with the right people, that you would need to have a strong sense of who you are, what you like, and your beliefs. A strong sense of individuality is important when it comes to choosing who you surround yourself with; otherwise, it makes it easier to be influenced by other people instead of making decisions for yourself. Thatâs not to say that you shouldnât be open to trying new things or be willing to learn from others. Instead, itâs important to be aware when someone is taking control of your ability to make decisions for yourself and pushing past your boundaries. That is when relationships have become toxic.
Toxic Relationships
Toxic relationships are a lot more common than we like to realize. They donât form overnight, so it can be difficult to admit that youâre in a toxic relationship because itâs been developing for quite some time. Toxic people are like a poison ivy infestation. They slowly start to creep into your life, steadily growing and twisting their stems around you and before you know it, theyâve created strong roots and spread everywhere, destroying everything in their path. Toxic people have the ability to completely wipe out someoneâs identity and replace it with one that suits their own needs.
Who are these toxic people? It could be anyone, from a parent, to a friend, to a spouse. Acknowledging that you're in a toxic relationship is a
